To those unfamiliar, rattan is like a cousin of the palm tree. The material has long been used in Asia for things like; basket weaving and, of course, furniture-making, but it has slowly made its way into popular demand. It is a very strong wood that is also incredibly flexible. This, coupled with its availability, makes it a great choice material in the furniture-making industry. However, natural rattan is susceptible to moisture, and makes it not quite suitable to colder or damper climates. Because of this, synthetic rattan or “rattan effect” came to be.
The most commonly used material for synthetic rattan is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Polyurethane (PU) and polyethene (PE) can also be used, albeit being priced a little higher due to better quality. Synthetic rattan boasts weatherproof features such as sunlight, but particularly against dampness, a factor that natural rattan doesn’t have.
Choosing rattan as the material for your furniture might just be one of the most financially ingenious decisions you’ll ever make for your house. As opposed to buying a normal sofa, rattan will definitely last a lot longer; especially when placed in an outdoor setting.
But regardless of location, rattan has become a widely popular contemporary furniture. People have started using it indoors, even though it was initially marketed as an outdoor fixture.
When buying rattan sofas, consider it as a sturdy base. The cushions may wear out, but those are easily replaceable; the structure of the sofa itself will last for a long time.
Rattan Sofa Outdoor
It’s a no-brainer that “normal” furniture can’t be used outside. Subjecting foam seats and cushions to the outdoor weathers is just a bad day waiting to happen, and the best way to avoid that is by choosing the path of least effort and resistance.
Rattan is such a low maintenance product that a simple wipe down would suffice on most occasions. Even leaving it out in the open for the rest of its life wouldn’t do much to it. Natural weathering won’t have a lot of noticeable effect on the material, not for a long, long time.
Rattan Corner Sofa
A rattan corner sofa is a great idea for a deck or patio. It can stay outside indefinitely, and will always be guest-ready in appearance. It can withstand typical weather conditions like the rain and sun, so there’s no need to scramble to drag it in when it does rain.
Family get-togethers and chill hangouts are also amazing, especially with a big corner sofa. Of course, putting a corner sofa in the living room is also a viable choice to make.
2-Seater Rattan Sofa
For tighter spaces, getting a two-seater sofa would be wise. If there’s only a few people regularly in the area, then it would make no sense to get a bigger one that would take up too much space.
3-Seater Rattan Sofa
If you’ve got a bit more wiggle room in your house, then what’s better than a two-seater? That’s right, a three-seater!
Kidding aside, a three-seater really would be a better choice, especially if you’re sharing the space with other people. A larger communal area is generally a better idea, to avoid elbowing each other in the face while trying to relax. We wouldn’t want any roommate feuds, now would we?
Getting rattan seats would also make party clean ups that much easier, so you can party the night away with no worries about making a mess all over the furniture.
Rattan Bistro Set
A bistro set would be a perfect addition to a garden. It’s a nice little space for relaxing under the sun, and again, no need to worry for a lot of wear and tear. You won’t have to hide it away when the weather gets rough, because the sturdy material will do most of the work for you.
Since it’s such a customizable material, getting a rattan bistro that suits your taste won’t be too hard. A variety of colors and forms are available on the market, so purchasing one is easy. Just imagine all the afternoon tea you can spend with your loved one, just lazing about in a garden.
Rattan Dining Set
Although synthetic rattan is more normal in damp countries, using natural rattan as a dining set might fare better than when using it as an outdoor fixture. The relatively controlled climate inside a house will allow the natural rattan to avoid the moistness that leads it to rot.
If you’d rather be safe than sorry though, then going the synthetic route is more than welcomed. With a furniture like this, one that will undoubtedly be used more constantly and heavily than others, a high-quality synthetic is recommended, like those made from PE materials. PE rattan is also a lot easier to maintain than PVC, but PVC is economically cheaper.
I found it a little surprising that a woven material can be so sturdy that it can hold a whole meal for a family, but rattan is exactly just that.
A rattan set won’t be complete without a chair. Even though rattan chairs look incredibly delicate, it can actually hold just as much as a normal chair, about 200 pounds. Using cushions with rattan is very normal, but some rattan chairs are designed specifically to help with posture, so users can go sans the extra padding.
Rattan chairs are usually even more intricately designed than the other rattan furniture. Some craftsmen make it so the back is shaped into something complicated like a flower, others form a heart, while the rest go with the more traditional square or round shapes. Even with the basic shapes, the weave patterns itself can make any aesthetically inclined person swoon.
Rattan Egg Chair
Egg chairs became a trend back in the 60s, and there’s no reason to stop them from making a comeback now. These chairs are great for small spaces, especially if you appreciate being cozied up. It’s a win-win situation, because not only do these eggs free up space, they also cut through straight lines that make a space seem more enclosed than it actually is.
With an egg chair, you have the option of going conventional with a grounded version, or going quirky with a hanging egg chair. Either way, it makes for a great statement piece as well as a simple little happy place for anyone who uses it.
Rattan Swing Chair
As mentioned, egg chairs can come in the form of a swing, but there are also other rattan swing chair shapes to consider. For just one person, a normal-sized egg chair would suffice, but for those who wouldn’t mind sharing the tight space, a larger, double-size swing would be the way to go. Another alternative, for those who don’t like the feeling of being closed up, is an open-top swing chair.
Just like all other rattan furniture, a rattan swing can be easily woven into various intricate designs. My personal favorites include a celestial weave pattern, as well as one that I can only describe as avocado-shaped.
Rattan Sun Lounger
For something that will have to be under the constant glare of the sun; a rattan sun lounger is the best bet. It will last much longer than the typical plastic lounge chair, which will quickly degrade under the heat. Not to mention the possibly toxic substances that could transfer from heated low-quality plastics.
A rattan sun lounger can come in many versions, some that are permanently reclined; while others are completely adjustable depending on the user. These loungers usually come with a set of side tables, so if you’re already splurging for this; then why not go all out?
Rattan Day Bed
I can’t stress this enough, but getting a daybed for a patio or poolside is a greatmove! On particularly lazy days with family, having the ability and comfort to just lounge about while watching children run or while having friends around is a wonderful moment that not everyone can afford to experience. If it’s within your capabilities, then there’s no stopping you from indulging in this little guilty pleasure.
Rattan Furniture Cushions
Most rattan furniture comes with cushions. The most common question about this is, since rattan is weather proof, can I leave my cushions with the furniture? The simplest answer is no. The rattan itself may be weatherproof, but depending on how it’s advertised, the cushion alone does not have that overall quality.
Leaving cushions out in light rain mightnot cause long-lasting damage, but to abandon it in the middle of a heavy pour will definitely require some aftercare effort on the owner’s part. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of that, then the best recourse would be to either cover the whole setup with a tarp or to take the cushions inside. The rattan furniture will survive on its own.
Since rattan is an incredibly lightweight material, rattan planters can be made into very large sizes without sacrificing its portability. Natural rattan can be used as an indoor planter, but a metal lining is recommended to avoid direct contact with moisture.
For a more long-lasting rattan planter, synthetic rattan would be better, especially with heavy duty gardening, as it would be expected to go through a more rigorous experience than typical indoor planters. Using a synthetic for outdoor planting is also practical, since it’s more resistant to natural damage than other materials.
Rattan Cube Set
You might be wondering what “cube” would even mean in the context of furniture. Well, it’s exactly as it implies: cube-shaped furniture.
Rattan cubes are furniture made to be compact and space-saving. These can come in the form of a living room set or even a dining room set, some are a combination of both. These cubes would be perfect for a cramped urban apartment, especially if you’re trying to maximize space and use of your household fixtures.
Black Rattan Garden Furniture
Typical rattan colors are black and brown, sometimes red if the you’re feeling risqué, but overall, black reigns supreme for obvious reasons. The color black can be easily integrated into literally any layout and design, it’s just the easiest color to deal with, so it makes sense to choose furniture according to that.
Add that in with the fact that black is just hard to dirty up. Little stains will go unnoticed, because really, who can see such minute details on black? When buying rattan furniture with the intention of “less effort, less maintenance”, buying a set in black is the most sensible way to go
Rattan Storage Box
Rattan storage boxes are as efficient as their name. They are simply durable boxes that can be used for storing a variety of items. Depending on the size, it can fit even seasonal sports gears like skis and snowboards.
As for more basic household items, these storage boxes are usually used for keeping spare pillows and linens, seasonal clothing, and even laundry.
Of all rattan furniture, the rattan lampshade is the one that is DIY-able. Of course, this is only possible if you have access to natural rattan or its synthetic counterparts. For those of us who don’t, no worries because there are lots of rattan lampshades on the market for us.
Some lampshades are a little more predictable, just like those people use for bedside tables. Others are much more innovative, such as the hanging lamps with an astounding number of different weaves. Rattan lamps can come in, again, a number of varying shapes, ranging from regular forms to barely-describable figures.
Maze Rattan is a product line that resulted into the Maze Living lifestyle brand. It was initially a main supplier for a lot of online rattan sellers, until they ventured into creating their own shop in order to sell directly to customers. They still distribute their products to resellers, but it’s worth noting that there’s a direct line to them, which makes transactions about purchases, and even warranties, a lot less complicated.
They have a wide range of rattan furniture line, from the essential fixtures to more luxurious ones. Also a 5-year product guarantee, although it depends on the contract and products involved.
